More than many other actions probably, does smoking reveal how objects are able to condition and influence encounters between people. Seeking to make these kinds of relations explicit, “Do You Mind if I Smoke?” explores the inherent role of objects as mute but mediating instances in human communication, while also playing with the metaphorical significance of objects as such.
Made from multiple slip clay castings using the same mould, the ashtrays of this series differ only in the amount of grooves they present to their users. It can therefore be assumed that each ashtray belongs to a specific context: from a single person to situations of many, does this series aim to hint at how things and humans interact and how all conversations are inherently aided and shaped by the objects around us.
